A lot of business owners don’t have the slightest clue what a USP even is! Present company excluded of course ;-) !

You see having a USP is the whole reason why your prospect “should buy from you and not your competitor!” So it’s pretty important to use it in your advertising & marketing.

And if you don’t have one then “get one!” (Hint: I'll help you with that a little later in this report!)

Let's look at it from your prospects point of view...

If you don’t have a point of difference over your competition, how will they know who to buy from if you both appear to offer exactly the same thing?

Test this theory... let's say you have a plumbing company.

Grab your local Yellow Pages Directory and go to the plumbing section.

What do you see?

Lots of ads and it's my guess you see lots of the same ads!

Sad and Boring!

But here is the really sad part because none of these ads stand out or give your prospects what they want (which is for you to solve their problem). 

So your prospects turn into price shoppers and they ring around all the plumbers in the section until they get the cheapest price!

Why?

Simply because your advertising failed to convinced them of your value to them.

It's your job in your advertising to show your prospects the true value in doing business with you and your USP is your unique competitive advantage that could be the deciding factor for your prospect to either take your offer or your competitions!

It is also the secret weapon that can get your customers raving about you to their friends and work mates.

One of the things that surprises me as a marketing consultant is that when I ask business owners...

 "What's the one thing that makes you different from your competition?"

Hardly any of them know it or they just say "Our Service or Our Price".

But if I ask them ok then... "What is your favourite restaurant?"

They all come back with an answers quick smart... Coyotes... Yamanga...The Steak Out and the list goes on!

And then when I ask them why it's their favourite?

They'll say stuff like... The Steak it's 3 inch' s thick and comes with this homemade sauce... The owner knows my name and every time we go there he gives us a free drink!

Maybe do this exercise yourself... What's your favourite restaurant? And why is it your favourite?

If any thing it will help you to start thinking about what makes you spend your money at a particular place!

You see I guarantee your customers, especially the customers who buy from you again and again have this similar feeling about dealing with you.

There will be a reason that they choose to shop with you, which could be your hidden USP.

So why not ask your customers and find out why they deal with you?

Here's is great way to do it.

You can design a survey for free that you can send to your customers via email. Their free service lets you send out 10 questions in total and receive 100 answers...which is a really great start!

I would keep the questions really simple to start with and perhaps only send out 1 or 2 questions in your first survey as you want to make it easy for your customers to complete first time around.

Once you have this information, you'll notice a few things that appear again and again.

Let's say once again you own a plumbing company. You send out your survey's and you get back 73 good worthy replies.

After reading through the answers you notice that a lot of people are commenting on the fact that your team always turns up on time and always ring 1 hour before they arrive just to let your customers know exactly when they'll be there.

Funny thing is you've never thought about this before... but when you do, you say to yourself "Yes, well that's just what we do because we want to treat people's time with respect!"

But do you get the point... this is why your customers are shopping with you again and again!

It's the 3 inch thick steak and homemade sauce REASON you go to your favourite restaurant!

It's your USP that you can now use to dominate your market!

OK... as promised here another way you can create a market dominating USP

Grab a pen and some sheets of paper because we're going to come up with a statement for “why your product or service is head and shoulders above the rest.”

Don’t worry if you’re not sure where to begin. Marketing guru Jay Abraham has a method that makes this very simple.

Let's see.

Here’s what you do.

1. Get a couple of sheets of paper.

2. On the top of one page, write “You know how…”

3. On the top of the next page write, “Well, what I do is…”

Next, he says simply fill in the blanks.

For example: Let's take the survey results for your Plumbing company...

“Well, you know how most Plumbers never turn up on time or finish the job finished on time, leave a filthy dusty mess behind, leave broken old taps, pipes everywhere and then charge more than the original quote due to “unforeseen difficult areas?

Well, what we do is guarantee that we’ll turn up on time, in fact we'll call you an hour before we arrive just to let you know we'll be there on time. We promise to leave your home looking “spick and span” when we have finished working each day.

Plus can you see the value of having a well-formulated USP will do for you?

It will tell your prospects/customers exactly what they can expect if they use your service or product. There are no “surprises” which leaves your prospect feeling more confident and relaxed about using your products or services. (And your price!)

 

This makes your marketing very simple indeed. Now you have your USP all worked out, use it in every piece of advertising material from now on.

 

Because so many businesses don’t have a USP or even know what one is, it’s likely that your competitor won't be using one. This makes it very attractive for your prospect to sway towards using your product or service. This is a very powerful position for you to be in.

Another great point too…before you come up with your final USP, check out to see what your competition ISN’T doing or offering that you do.

This could very well be your USP.

I have a saying that I made up few years ago it goes like this...

Knowledge is Power... but ACTION is the key to your Dreams!

You see you can learn all you want but unless you take ACTION on what you've learnt it's a total waste of time. You have to unleash your knowledge by taking ACTION, this way you'll turn it into something valuable that people want and will pay you good money for!

So grab that sheet of paper again and start writing out your businesses Unique Selling Proposition... Remember on the top of the page write

1. “You know how…”

and

2. On the top of the next page write, “Well, what I do is…”

You have the examples to follow so no excuses... right?
